Applying the Comprehensive System to group Rorschach

Psykologia 36:140-147. Vammala ISSN 0355-1067

This study examined the reliability of the group Rorschach method that is widely used in psychological aptitude testing in Finland. Inquiry which is considered necessary for valid interpretation is not usually performed after a group Rorschach procedure. It was essential to study what kind of information about an individual's personality (controls and situation stress, processing, ideation and mediation, affect, interpersonal perception and self perception) can be gathered with Rorschach method without inquiry. The Rorschach records of thirty subjects (mean age 17) were coded without and with inquiry. The records without inquiry were coded according to Ritzler and Nalesnik's (1990) instructions, and the records including an inquiry according to the Comprehensive System (Exner, 1993). The results showed that most variables could be coded correctly without inquiry but the variables related to distress and controlling feelings were not observed without inquiry. The authors' conclusion is that the group Rorschach method, when administered and interpreted with care and skill, is a useful method of gathering information about an individual's personality.
