The structure and stability of job-related affective well-being over a three-year follow-up study

Psykologia 40:541-551. Vammala ISSN 0355-1067.

The aims of this three-year follow-up study among Finnish managers (n = 615) were two-fold: first, to test the theoretically-based structure of the job-related affective well-being scale and, second, to examine the stability of the obtained factors of affective well-being. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed that the hypothesized correlated four-factor model best described the structure of the job-related affective well-being scale; that is the scale included the four interrelated factors of job-related anxiety, contentment, depression and enthusiasm at both measurement times. The results of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) indicated that the obtained factors turned out to be relatively stable across time with the stability coefficients being 0.67 for anxiety, 0.60 for contentment, 0.64 for depression, and 0.60 for enthusiasm. The results of MANOVA with repeated measures indicated that top managers reported the highest and shop-floor supervisors the lowest job-related affective well-being. The results further indicated that contentment increased and depression decreased during the follow-up time (from 1996 to 1999). Interaction effects between managerial level and time were not detected.
