Psychological processes of mindfulness and research approaches used
Psykologia 44:378&endash;394. Sastamala ISSN 0355-1067.
This article illuminates empirical research approaches and the current theoretical understanding of psychological processes connected with the mindfulness phenomenon. The concept of mindfulness refers to the process of paying attention in a non-judgmental and detached way to anything that emerges in the consciousness at the present moment. In Asia mindfulness has been practiced over 2500 years to relieve suffering. During the past thirty years mindfulness has also become establishedin the context of western health care practices as a means of enhancing reflective and self-regulatory capacities. An increasing interest inthe scientific research of mindfulness and its effects has followed practical applications in western countries. The evidence base about the efficacy and the health benefits of mindfulness based interventions already exists. However, qualitative, context sensitive research approaches are needed to find the developmental processes and user constructed outcomes connected with mindfulness based interventions.
Key words: mindfulness, consciousness, psychological processes, self-regulation, self-reflection, empirical research
